On
the backdrop of protests, CM of Assam
Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal ordered Suklabaidya, forest minister to visit
saleki and conduct a field survey.
Hello everyone,
today I will let you know about very sensitive and burning issue which occupies
the whole section of media few days back. And the issue is about the permission
of coal mining in dehing patkai elephant reserve.
It is the largest rainforest in India
stretches for 575 sq kms across tinsukia, dibrugarh and sibsagar districts in
upper assam. This forestland is also known as “Amazon of the east”. The Amazon
which is also a rainforest located across Brazil, Columbia Peru and other South
American Countries. Both the forestlands, Amazon and Dehing patkai are the
tropical rain forest with various species of flora and fauna. Although dehing
patkai is smaller than amazon in area but it has similar characteristics. If
Amazon is the lungs of whole world then dehing patkai is also the lungs of the
whole north east India.

The biodiversity
of Dehing patkai rainforest is very rich and unique. Dehing patkai rainforest is a home to over 40
species of fauna including elephants, tigers, bears and famous Assam macaque.
Around 293 species of birds, over 40 species of reptiles, over 60 types of
trees and around 100 varieties of orchids. One important point is that it is
the only rainforest where 7 different types of cat species are found. It is an
elephant reserve of which saleki is a
part.

But, recently
dehing patkai is in grave threat as NBWL i.e. National Board for Wildlife
undertakes coal mining. Recently on 7th April 2020 NBWL has permitted
North Eastern coal field (NECF) – a unit of Coal India Limited to start the
mining of coal in 98.59 hactres of land in dihing patkai at saleki region. That
region is already facing a huge threat
by high polluting industries like oil refineries, gas drilling affecting
the biodiversity of the region. Just think what will be consequences of coal
mining in saleki region. It will affect the ecosystem of the sanctuary and also
affect the home of Asiatic elephants and will be the worst tragedy for ecological balance.

Many peoples from Mr. Jadav Payeng, Forest man of
India, to other environmental activists , students and different organizations
conducted a strongest campaign against this decision. On the backdrop of protests, CM of Assam Mr. Sarbananda Sonowal ordered Suklabaidya,
forest minister to visit saleki and conduct a field survey.

And at last, I just want to request our government
not to execute coal mining in such a beautiful rainforest which is a home for varieties
of flora and fauna. So, please stop coal mining
and save dihing patkai.
