IS STRESS REALLY THE ROOT OF EVERY PROBLEMS ?
IS STRESS REALLY THE ROOT OF EVERY PROBLEMS ?
Mind, body
as well as working environment must be free of obstacles or stress for good or
productive result/outcome. One’s mind or body must be stress free. But due to
hectic schedule, huge work load, superior pressure, physical stress like
surgery, infections, burns and pain and environmental stress due to air and
noise pollution etc. leads to stress. According to B. Srilakshmi in her book “Dietetics”
wrote that stress is a perceived state of disturbed harmony produced by a
stimulus, condition or an event called the stressor. The disturbances results from the concerned
person’s inability to meet the threat posed by the stressor or from his
inadequacy to satisfy the demands imposed by it. According to American
Psychological Association (APA), there are three types of stress- Acute stress,
Episodic acute stress and Chronic
stress.
I would also like to add here one thing that
we often thinks stressor being only negative are always a reason for stressful
like exhausting work load or an unsuccessful relationship etc.. But it is not like that, stressor can also be positive
cause too like getting married, buying a
house or getting promoted etc..
Signs of stress:
Anger |
Constant worry |
Depression or anxiety |
Feeling unmotivated,
overwhelmed |
Irritation or restlessness |
Cannot decide good or bad |
Problems with
concentration or memory |
Trouble in sleeping or
sleeping too much |
Dizziness |
Aches and pains |
Grinding teeth |
Clenched jaw |
Headache |
Indigestion or acid reflux |
Increase in or loss of
appetite |
Muscle tension in neck,
face or shoulders |
Impact on health
If stress
become chronic then it will affect one’s health. Stress contributes to:
Heart disease |
Strokes |
High blood pressure |
Colitis |
Diabetes |
Kidney disorder |
Rheumatism |
Depression |
Migraine |
Insomnia |
Skin disease |
Sexual problems |
Allergies |
Overeating |
Asthma |
Ulcers |
Breathing problems |
Cancer |
Therefore,
we can say that stress is the cause of many diseases and yes, it is obviously
the root of many problems. But, if there is a will there is a way. In the same
way, if one wants he/she can manage or get rid of stressful life.
Stress management
There is a
proverb called “Each and every problems has a particular solution”. In the same
way, we can manage stress. Stress management consists of making behavioural
change by practicing or changing habits and also managing one’s response to
stressful situations when it occurs.
Why stress management is important?
Many
researchers reported that stress management can boost up immune system, well
brain functioning and can cope up well in stressful situations, which is
positive result of stress management.
9 ways to manage stress : a stress relieve help guide
Research shows
that person who work out even once a week or for as little as 10 minutes a day
emerges to be more cheerful and have productive good works. There are many
other methods to reduce stress.
1.
Therapy: Various
therapies can help in managing stress like dance therapy, aroma therapy etc. .
Dance therapy is the psychotherapeutic use of movement to emotional and
physical integration of an individual. It can be used by patients to release
tension. In aroma therapy, aroma from different oil extractions from plants
like citronella, eucalyptus are applied through massage.
2.
Spa: Spa is also
an effective way of stress management. In this process, systematic manipulation
of soft tissue increases circulation and decrease muscle tension.
3.
Exercise: One must do
exercise for minimum 10 minutes per day. Physical activity reduces stress.
4.
Hobby: One must do
things which he/she likes to do for example gardening, stitching, cooking, playing
etc. in their leisure time.
5.
Meditation: By doing
meditation one can increase concentration power or get rid of distracting
thoughts and also invokes the relaxation response.
6.
Yoga: Yoga is a
psycho-somatic-spiritual discipline for achieving harmony between mind, body
and soul. Yoga is mind-body practices. It has positive effect on fitness and
physical flexibility with an effect on mental state. It also boost confidence
and reduce anxiety.
7.
Nature: Wandering
in natural scenery or breathing fresh air in outdoor surrounded by trees,
flowers can relax one’s stressful mind.
8.
Music: Music
decreases cortisol, epinephrine and norepinephrine. It can soothe or refresh
one’s mind.
9.
Foods:
Foods can also refresh or comfort mind in some way. Some food items are shown in video given below.
Therefore, I would like to conclude that physical activity, maintaining muscle mass along with
nutritious foods one can manage stress and live a healthy life. Always find a
recipe of one’s happiness, sing a song, dance, visit friends, relatives, talk
and laugh with family and also with them.
